Pakistan Needs Leadership of 1948

Pakistan is a living and exemplary monument of Quaid-i-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, he was the first Governor General of Pakistan and performed his duties extraordinarily for the country and nation. The reason behind Jinnah’s enormous popularity is his unique characteristics like fastidious, aloof, and imperious. Here are few remarkable and out of the ordinary events of our Quaid’s life.

Our Quaid was very strict to Government spending. Once few items were purchased for the Governor General's House just for amounting to Rs.38.50. When bill was presented to him, he found that a few items were purchased on Mohtarima Fatima Jinnah’s request; he gave instructions that the amount was to be deducted from her account. A couple of items were for his own personal use for those items he instructed their amount to be deducted from his personal account. The remaining items were purchased for the Governor House, for that items his instruction was that may be charged to the Government. Later, he strongly instructed to never charge any expenditure not related to the Government and proper check should be made on Government spending.

Once the ADC inquires from our Quaid before start of the cabinet meeting “Sir what will be served in the meeting…Tea or Coffee?”. Quaid-i-Azam looked up and replied sternly “Whichever of the Ministers wish to have tea or coffee should drink it before leaving his home or when he returns home. The Nation’s money is for the Nation and not for the Ministers!”. The instructions of our great Quaid were implemented as long as he was the head of the nation and nothing except water was ever served in the Cabinet meetings.

Quaid-i-Azam was the brave leader and never ever let Pakistan down internationally. Duke of Gloucester, the brother of British Emperor when going to visit Pakistan the British envoy requested our Quaid to receive him at the Airport. Quaid-i-Azam instantly replied, “if I do so then the British head of state (King) would have to reciprocate when my brother would visit London”.

Quaid-i-Azam was also very much reluctant in overspending for his personal requirements, when Col. Ilahi Bukhsh brought pair of socks during severe winter season for our Quaid. He liked them but when he knows their price which was Rs. 2/-, he said price is so high. Col Illah Bukhsh replied, “the socks had been purchased from your account” our Quaid said “even my account is a National trust…the Head of a poor country should not be so extravagant!” after saying that our Quaid returned those socks to the Colonel.

During routine official work Quaid-i-Azam ordered for a writing table to be installed in his plane, but when the file reached the Finance Ministry; the finance minister sanctioned it and sent a note to our Quaid stating, “The Governor General must ask the Finance Ministry before issuing any such Order”. After receipt of that note, he suddenly withdrew his previous order and gave a written apology.

When Quaid-i-Azam was in Ziarat he was impressed with the work of a particular Nurse and asked what he can do for her. She requested our Quaid, she belongs from Punjab and is alone in Quetta while her family is living in Punjab if he could have her transferred to Punjab. As we believe our Quaid was a man of principle he truly shows his sincerity to her and  answered rather regretfully, “I am sorry, all this is in the hands of the Health Ministry and not the Governor General's jurisdiction.”

Quaid-i-Azam always tried to obey rules, once he was moving with his ADC, Gul Hasan in a car. The ADC requested the railway track gates to be opened so that car may passover unhindered, but our Quaid anger on the ADC and ordered for shutting the gates and saying “If I do not obey rules – who else will!”.

All above events happened about 61 years ago when Mohammed Ali Jinnah was the Head of the State. When we compare Pakistan of that time with current realities of Pakistan, we really feel shame on our actions. Now the Head of State may announce 50 million funding or donation at his own will, without giving importance to get sanction from Finance Ministry first. Railway track/gates aside, all the traffic signals switted off one hour before the royal entourage goes by and some time serious patients die in ambulances blocked in such traffic.

Hundreds of people hired and fired without following rules and regulations and promotions made for their personal interests. What to mention socks, even kids pampers and many other personal expenditure charged to the National treasury which has brought the expenditure of President House and Prime Minister budget over 380 million collectively. Family members and some close friends of Head of State are also availing facilities, which they actually not entitled for.

Today, at the arrival of American officials the Head of the State along with his whole team present at the airport to receive them. In the Cabinet meetings and some other official meetings extra ordinary refreshments along with lunches and dinners are served. First Governor General of Pakistan were allowed only single Inspector of police and one police car at the time when Gandhi had been killed and the life of our Quaid was in danger too. In such situation Quaid-i-Azam went for his evening walk without security but now not only Head of States but some Ministers also not willing to travel even five kilometers without modern bulletproof cars, security guards and well trained Commandos.

We should admit that we have failed establishing a dynamic morally upright nation. The nation wants to see the moral integrity of the Pakistan of 61 years back with a peaceful environment. We, the 170 million, poor people of Pakistan desire relieve from current progress, prestige and prosperity and demanding to restore us the venerable Pakistan of the Quaid-i-Azam i.e. the Pakistan of 1948.
