During last few decades Pakistan Institute of Development Economics (PIDE) has brought in an international reputation and recognition for its research, and is now a federally chartered degree granting institute (DAI) offering world class degree programs in economics, population sciences, econometrics and statistics, environmental economics, and MBA.

PIDE was established in 1957 and was granted the status of an independent research organization in 1964 by the Government of Pakistan. This institute is engaged in the process of theoretical and empirical research in economics and related Social sciences. In addition to furnishing a firm academic basis to economic policy-making, its research also provides a window through which the exterior world can view the nature and direction of social science research in Pakistan.

The department of Economics in Pakistan Institute of Development Economics consists of senior faculty members. Several members of the department are also providing assistance to various government agencies and other multi/bi-lateral organizations as advisors.

The role of quality education in producing a better world is increasing to the large extent. PIDE engage in grooming students to effectively deal with new global challenges. In current scenario, in Pakistan only a small percentage of the total population has get at to higher education, it is hoped that the MSc, MPhil and PhD program at PIDE would be a step forward in a vital field of knowledge and expertise.

MSc, MPhil and PhD program at PIDE is targeted imparting a full range of knowledge, awareness and expertise in economics. The degree programs in Economics have been a long-felt necessitate in Pakistan. In recent years, the number of qualified economists has diminished below the country’s requirements. Brain drain of economists to take up attractive jobs abroad has only provoked this professional vacuum in various government and non-government departments, teaching institutes, and research organizations. The degree programs in Economics at the Pakistan Institute of Development Economics (PIDE) have been developed to meet some of these challenges by rendering the necessary facilities for training economists in Pakistan.

To attain the objectives and to furnish the educational needs of future leaders in Government, PIDE has designed a broad-based educational facility, and it has launched Master’s and MPhil programs. At PIDE the PhD Program in Economics is well-established and is being proposed since 1999, as of today, 13 students have been granted the PhD degree in Economics.

Scope of M.Phil / Ph.D. Degree

With broad knowledge in economics and specialized attainments in financial and analytical techniques, graduates of MPhil/PhD are well-prepared to adopt career in the public and/or private sector as economic analysts in businesses, consultancy firms, financial institutions, and applied research firms. They may also get jobs in international organizations, like the World Bank, IMF, International Labor Organization, etc., government ministries, and non-government organizations (NGOs), universities, and in other teaching and research organization.
